Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora has written to Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on the Mumbai Airport near-miss incident involving Indigo & Air India. Deora said this incident highlights the critical risks associated with runway congestion and poses a severe threat to passenger safety
He has requested the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to initiate a comprehensive inquiry and conduct an exhaustive investigation into the incident to determine the causes and identify any procedural or systemic failures that contributed to this near-miss. He has asked DGCA to review and reinforce existing safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with runway congestion and ensure robust mechanisms are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future
He has also asked DGCA to thoroughly assess the airport's infrastructure and explore viable options for capacity expansion to manage the high volume of air traffic more safely and efficiently.
On 8th June an IndiGo aircraft landed on the same runway where an Air India aircraft was taking off. The DGCA has also initiated an investigation and de-rostered an Air Traffic Control, further investigation is underway.
IndiGo in a statement said, "On Jun 8, 2024, IndiGo flight 6E 6053 from Indore was given landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport. The Pilot in Command continued the approach and landed and followed ATC instructions."
Air India in a statement said, "AI657 from Mumbai to Trivandrum was on take-off roll on June 8. The Air India aircraft was cleared by Air Traffic Control to enter the runway and subsequently cleared for take-off. The Air India aircraft continued with the take-off roll in accordance with laid down procedures. An investigation has been initiated by the authorities to find out more on the clearance given to the airlines. Air India always accords top priority to the safety of its passengers and crew."
